Discuss World Issues

Four Licking Heights High School students, Alisa Malone, Prince Kuevor, Egor
Abramovskikh and Jessica Alexander
, were provided with an exciting opportunity
to join others from all over the world and discuss world issues over their spring break. The retreat, sponsored by the Columbus Council on World Affairs, took
place April 1-3 at Camp Oty’Okawa in South Bloomfield, Ohio and hosted only

The Licking Heights Local School District web site has been expanded to include instructional videos for student reference from school or home. As part of our ongoing efforts to be a leader not only in academics but also technology, we are constantly challenging the concept of how four walls are defined in today’s modern classroom.

Licking Heights Students Advance to National Competition  
 
Several marketing education students from Licking Heights High School
competed at the recent Ohio DECA Career Development Conference in
Columbus. Junior Kailee Stevens placed first in the state in the Restaurant
and Food Service Marketing Management event.  Alisa Malone &
Marqus Smith finished fourth in the Sports & Entertainment Marketing
Management Team event.  Farhiya Abdi also placed fourth in the Principles
of Marketing interview event for first-year members.  Their high ranking
qualified them to compete at the International DECA Career Conference
in Orlando, Florida at the end of April. In all, twenty-nine DECA
members from Heights participated in the state conference.  In addition
to the national qualifiers, other finalists receiving medals onstage
included Kori Charles, Sara Goff, Sebrina Herndon, Vlade Necovski,
and Kaity Perfect. Congratulations and good luck to all these students.

Gavin Kenny, an 8th Grade student at Licking Heights Central has been notified
by National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete
in the 2011 Ohio National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.

recently sponsored a little girl through the Salvation Army of Licking County.  The team in lieu of gifts for each other combined their money and bought items on the girls list as well as collected food for her family.

Licking Heights DECA Competes in Fall Conference
 
Columbus, Ohio, November 30, 2010.  Several students from the Licking Heights High School Marketing Program competed in the Ohio DECA Fall Leadership Conference at the Columbus Convention Center on November 16. The goal of this conference was to elect state officers and give DECA members a chance to attend leadership seminars. Danisha Mitchell (Senior) and Jessica Alexander (Junior) competed for state Parliamentarian. Kailee Stevens and Gabrielle Palombaro, both Juniors, competed for Female Public Relations Officer.  Miss Stevens was a finalist, achieving the rank of top ten in the state in her contest.  Sara Goff, a Senior, was elected Southeast Region Vice President.  Miss Goff will serve in her state office position throughout the coming school year.
Licking Heights Student Named Queen

Licking Height’s very own Kylie Beane was given the opportunity to participate in the America’s Homecoming Queen Pageant representing the Licking Heights High School this past weekend in Dayton, Ohio.

Licking Heights Division II Quiz Bowl Champions
The 42nd Annual Licking County Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament was held at Centerburg H.S. on March 24, 2010.  Licking Heights was awarded 1st place in Division II and advanced to the semi-finals.  Licking Heights will compete in the Ohio Academic Competition. The competition will be held at Shawnee State University, Portsmouth, OH on April 24th.

Licking Heights Central teacher will participate in study tour of China
Licking Heights is proud to announce that 6th Grade social studies teacher Ellen Miller has been selected to participate in the 2010 NCTA Study Tour of China.  Mrs. Miller will spend three weeks in China this summer and visit cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Xi’an.  She will develop new curriculum upon her return.  This is a prestigious honor for Mrs. Miller and the Licking Heights Local School District.  Read More..........

2010 Summer Teacher Academy a Success!
 
Twenty seven teachers demonstrated their commitment to high quality instructional practices by voluntarily participating in the 2010 Summer Teacher Academy at Licking Heights.  Each of the district’s five buildings was represented at the two-day event.  This year’s featured topic was “Addressing the Needs of Our Diverse Student Body.”  Dr. Rhonda Talford Knight of Ohio University provided teachers with background knowledge about addressing the needs of a culturally diverse student body through the understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy.  Additionally, Verne Benson, district technology director, and Vicki Willett, first grade teacher, led a session on creating teacher web pages.  Dedicated teachers like those who attended the 2010 Summer Teacher Academy help to make Licking Heights an Excellent district.

Licking Heights Teacher Working Toward Doctorate

Denver J. Fowler is a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership program at Ohio University. Denver also serves as a part-time adjunct professor and lecturer at The Ohio State University within the College of Education and Human Ecology and is employed full-time by Licking Heights Local School District where he teaches sixth grade. Mr. Fowler holds a Masters of Arts in Education degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from The Ohio State University. His research interests include: (1) Educational Leadership; (2) Ethics in Educational Leadership, and (3) Urban Education.


Licking Heights High School Cheerleaders Attended Cheer Ohio Camp
 
Licking Heights High School cheerleaders attended Cheer Ohio camp at Denison University June 22-25. They earned 1st place in the Home Dance competition, 1st place in the Fight Song competition, and 2nd place for Final evaluation. The team also won the prestigious "Spirit Key" award that goes to the Varsity team who best demonstrates leadership and sportsmanship. This is the second year in a row the team has won the Fight Song and Spirit Key awards. After taking a month off, the team will host a youth camp July 28, 29, and 30 at LHHS.

Licking Heights Students Postpone Summer Break for Science Adventure Club

Summer vacation had to wait for forty Licking Heights North 5th graders.   They spent the first week of June at three educational destinations as members of the Science Adventures Club.  The group of students were nominated by North's Science teachers to join the new club because they each demonstrated a love for science, success in the classroom, and  outstanding behavior this year.  The group ventured to Conesville on Tuesday and toured the AEP coal burning power plant.  On Wednesday, they flew off to Dayton and visited the National Air Force Base Museum before ending the fun at COSI on Thursday.  The students enjoyed each day's activities and earned high levels of praise at each destination for excellent behavior, showing a strong desire to learn and the wealth of knowledge they demonstrated. 
Focusing on individual student achievement helped Licking Heights North Elementary earn an Excellent with Distinction rating......

 The Marching Hornets were participants in the Buckeye Invitational held at Ohio Stadium this past Saturday. The competition featured 35 high school bands from across Ohio. The Marching Hornets earned their second superior rating this season! They placed second in their Class B division. The band also won Best Percussion & Best Auxiliary in Class B. They will be participating in their last competition of the season this Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at Springfield Shawnee. Then they will compete in their 21st straight OMEA competition on Sunday, October 31st.

Two members of the junior class at Licking Heights High School have met the
requirements to enter the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Rachel Dalton
and Amber Nagy both earned a Selection Index score of above 202 on the 2010
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Christina Sommerkamp Awarded Teacher of Excellence
 
Licking Heights South Elementary 4th grade teacher Christina Sommerkamp
been awarded the Teacher of Excellence Award from Invention Convention.
The award is presented each year to an American teacher who has inspired,
uplifted, motivated and led by example, in order to positively impact students.
Christina has received a $1,500 gift card to Microcenter to purchase technology
for her classroom along with several other amenities for her classes enjoyment.

Licking Heights Receives Nutrition Grants

Licking Heights Local School District has recently been awarded five Healthier
Ohio School Challenge Team Nutrition grants.  Each of the district’s five
schools will receive $11,500 for the 2011-2012 school year to continue and
expand recent nutrition initiatives through the Food Service Department.
