"I don't like art because I don't know how to draw"

"I don't like art because I don't know how to draw"

This quote I hear far too often.  Mostly it happens at the beginning of the year or during the semester change when I receive new classes.  Every year I base all of the projects we do in class about different kinds of art, not just drawing, and try to expose my students to different avenues they could take in the art world.  However, I still hear this message from my students.  I have finally tapped into the underlying message from my students.  It has come very apparent to me what they are really saying... "will you teach me how to draw better?"

I recently read two articles written by Marvin Bartel, Ed.D. from the Goshen College website (www.goshen.edu/art/ed/art-ed-links.html) How to Teach Drawing to Children, and Art Rituals in the Classroom , in which he discusses this very same issue.  It all made sense to me after that.

I have now restructured my art classroom.  For the first 5-10 minutes everyday students will come into my classroom and complete a practice drawing exercise.  I will keep these drawing exercises in a folder, and we will eventually create our very own sketchbooks using these very same exercises.  I found myself going through my old Drawing I, Drawing II, and Drawing III folders from Otterbein to come up with ideas for exercises for my class.

In all of this soul searching on how to make my class the best it can be, I found that I was getting really excited!  I can see the excitement being passed through to the students.  They have shown nothing but eagerness, and willingness to tackle everything I have thrown at them so far.  My hope is for these students to move on to High School with a greater appreciation for the arts, and to take more art classes with the basic skills and techniques already in their back pocket.
