Tips for cold and flu season
From district nurse Jennifer Price

As we are in the height of cold and flu season, I would like to send some tips and reminders to keep our students and staff healthy.

Please remember to keep your students home when they are ill. Students must be fever free and vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours WITHOUT the aid of medications, such as Advil or Tylenol.

Students will be sent home if they have:
  • Temperature of 100.0 F or greater
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
Things you can do to keep you and your student healthy:
  • Handwashing is the best way to prevent germs from spreading. Little ones need constant reminders to wash their hands and to cover their coughs.
  • Rest! Your body needs lots of rest to stay healthy and to fight off infections. School-aged children need at least 10-12 hours of sleep each night.
  • Make healthy food choices and drink plenty of fluids. Fueling your body with good nutrients and staying properly hydrated aids in fighting infections.
  • Try your best to avoid contact with those who are ill and stay home when you are sick. This helps to minimize the spread of germs.
Symptoms of the flu include:
  • Fever and chills
  • Body aches and/or headaches
  • Tiredness
  • Occasional cough, sore throat, or runny nose
The Center for Disease Control recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot. It is not too late to get your flu shot! Contact your healthcare provider, local pharmacy or retail clinics. The Licking and Franklin County Health Departments also take appointments for immunizations.

If your child is ill, please notify your building’s attendance secretary that they will be out for the day. If a doctor diagnoses them with an illness, please let us know.

As always, please contact me with any questions.
