One Licking Heights student is sharing the puppy love for her birthday.

Lola Unger, a fourth grader at Broad Peak Elementary, coordinated a donation drive for the dogs and cats of Columbus Humane to celebrate her ninth birthday. This is the fourth year Lola collected pet food, treats, toys and monetary donations in lieu of gifts for her birthday.

Each year, Lola selects a different animal shelter in Central Ohio to support for her birthday. Previous recipients include the Franklin County Dog Shelter in 2021, the Licking County Humane Society in 2022 and the Licking County Dog Shelter in 2023.

Lola’s parents, Joe and Loretta, say that Lola’s interest in helping pets started when she watched videos posted on Facebook by the Franklin County Dog Shelter. When Lola saw how happy the dogs were to receive treats, she wanted to do something that would help them. 

“I was sad seeing all the dogs in the shelter,” Lola says. “I wanted to help them and make them happy, because I literally love them!”

Recently, Lola has expanded her donation drives to support cats as well. This year, her donors used Columbus Humane’s Amazon wishlist to select products. She received the highest amount of donations yet.

“The generosity and support of our friends and family make this happen each year. We are truly grateful and appreciate all their support for Lola and her collections," says Loretta. “Lola has a big heart, but it’s our village that shows up and answers the call each year. They are beyond generous and make this all possible.”
